Export

Overview

Steelkilt allows you to export your work to the following formats:

  • EPUB
  • PDF
  • Plain Text
  • RTF

Different options are available for each format.

Export Scope

Some export formats allow you to export specific chapters. These include:

  • PDF
  • Plain Text
  • RTF

If a Document or Chapter is open when you choose one of these import types, the export scope will be limited to that Document or Chapter.

To control export Scope, use the scope selector at the bottom of the Export dialog to select from the available Books, Documents and Chapters.

Exporting Your Work

To export your work:

  • Open Project Navigator
  • Tap the Export button in the toolbar at the bottom of the Project Navigator
  • Select one of the available export formats (EPUB, PDF etc.)

Tip

Always run the EPUB Error Scanner before doing an export. Steelkilt uses the Resources in your Project to improve export quality — even if you are not exporting to EPUB — so problems in your Resources may affect your export. The EPUB Error Scanner will tell you if there are any problems and help you fix them.

EPUB

EPUB is the default export format. When exporting to EPUB, Steelkilt will compile the Resources associated with the selected Book into an EPUB file.

Options

No options are available for EPUB exports.

PDF

When exporting to PDF, Steelkilt will compile either of the following into PDF:

  • When a Book is selected:
    • The Book’s Title Page
    • Table of Contents (optional)
    • All Documents and Chapters
    • Title Pages for all Parts
    • Annotations (optional)
  • When a Document or Chapter is selected, just that Document or Chapter

Options

The following options are available for PDF exports:

OptionDescription
Include Table of ContentsEnabled and switched on by default.

Disabled for export of Documents and Chapters.

If switched on, Steelkilt will include a Table of Contents in the PDF that is generated based on “Table of Contents” settings of Formatting and the Include in Table of Contents options in Document and Chapter Settings.

If the Convert Markdown and HTML option (see below) is switched on, then the Table of Contents will use the CSS formatting information in the Code Editor associated with nav.xhtml.
Include annotationsDisabled and switched off by default.

To enable this option, you must switched off the Convert Markdown and HTML option (see below).

If switched on, Steelkilt will export any annotations and notes associated with the selected Book, Document or Chapter.

The text selection and annotation color in the PDF will mirror the same in Steelkilt.
Convert Markdown and HTMLEnabled and switched on by default.

If switched on, Steelkilt will export the selected Book, Document or Chapter using its XHTML and CSS representation (as found in Code Editor after Markdown processing).

Note

This option works best for text-based books with basic markup. Steelkilt cannot convert all XHTML and CSS directives into PDF. For example, tables and CSS absolute positioning will not render properly.

If switched off, Steelkilt will export the selected Book, Document or Chapter text including any Markdown and HTML that appears in Text Editor.

Plain Text

When exporting to Plain Text, Steelkilt will compile either of the following into text:

  • When a Book is selected:
    • The Book’s Title Page
    • Table of Contents (optional)
    • All Documents and Chapters
    • Title Pages for all Parts
    • Book metadata (optional)
  • When a Document or Chapter is selected, just that Document or Chapter

Options

The following options are available for Plain Text exports:

OptionDescription
Include Table of ContentsEnabled and switched on by default.

Disabled for export of Documents and Chapters.

If switched on, Steelkilt will include a Table of Contents in the PDF that is generated based on the Include in Table of Contents options in Document and Chapter Settings.
Strip Markdown and HTMLEnabled and switched off by default.

If switched on, Steelkilt will strip any Markdown or HTML tags from the Text Editor content before export.

If switched off, Steelkilt will export the contents of the Text Editor without modification.

RTF

When exporting to RTF, Steelkilt will compile either of the following into RTF:

  • When a Book is selected:
    • The Book’s Title Page
    • Table of Contents (optional)
    • All Documents and Chapters
    • Title Pages for all Parts
  • When a Document or Chapter is selected, just that Document or Chapter

Options

The following options are available for RTF exports:

OptionDescription
Include Table of ContentsEnabled and switched on by default.

Disabled for export of Documents and Chapters.

If switched on, Steelkilt will include a Table of Contents in the RTF that is generated based on “Table of Contents” settings of Formatting and the Include in Table of Contents options in Document and Chapter Settings.

If the Convert Markdown and HTML option (see below) is switched on, then the Table of Contents will use the CSS formatting information in the Code Editor associated with nav.xhtml.
Convert Markdown and HTMLEnabled and switched on by default

If switched on, Steelkilt will export the selected Book, Document or Chapter using its XHTML and CSS representation (as found in Code Editor after Markdown processing)

Note

This option works best for text-based books with basic markup. Steelkilt cannot convert all XHTML and CSS directives into RTF. For example, tables and CSS absolute positioning will not render properly.

If switched off, Steelkilt will export the selected Book, Document or Chapter text including any Markdown and HTML that appears in Text Editor.
